World War II Vet Dons Uniform For His Last Day On Earth

Justus Belfield, a 98-year-old World War II and Korean War veteran, put on his army uniform, one he wore proudly during 17 years of service for our country, and saluted one last time on Veteran’s Day.  The photo of his final salute (seen below), has since gone viral.

Belfield passed away hours later, early on Wednesday.

A World War II veteran passed away Wednesday at the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia.

Justus Belfield, 98, spent his last full day on earth in his army uniform, lying in bed at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia with his wife Lillian in her own bed next to him.

Belfield had been in the facility since April 2013. Lillian was already a resident when he moved into the facility to be with her.

Belfield fought in the Battle of the Bulge, took part in the Berlin Airlift which dropped food and supplies to the people of West Berlin, and fought in the Korean War.

The Utica, New York native talked about why he re-enlisted numerous times to serve his country, saying in an interview in 2013 that he loved it because it was his country.

“It was a good thing to do. I loved it because it was my country. It’s still my country.” he said.  “I don’t like the president. I don’t like the way he handles things, but it’s still the United States. It’s still my country.”

Belfield’s obituary can be seen here.

God bless an American hero, Justus Belfield.  And thank you for your service.
