News anchors from KTVU in the San Francisco Bay area ran a report on the pilots involved in the deadly Asiana Airlines Flight 214 plane crash, using names that somebody clearly posted as a racist joke.
Captain Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, and Bang Ding Ow, all were listed in the report.
Via Metro UK:
KTVU news station has been the victim of a cruel prank, announcing that the pilots of the Asiana Airlanes plane that crashed in San Francisco on Saturday included ‘Captain Sum Ting Wong’ and ‘Ho Lee Fuk’.
The cheap, racist jokes might not have been funny, but KTVU’s failure to spot them certainly were.
‘KTVU has just learned the names of the four pilots on board the flight’ the newsreader announced, before reading one-by-one the crack team of ‘Sum Ting Wong’, ‘Wi Tu Lo’, ‘Ho Lee Fuk’ and ‘Bang Ding Ow’.
It added that it was still trying to ascertain what roles the pilots played aboard Flight 214.
The station later apologised on-air, insisting that the names had been confirmed by a National Transportation Safety Board official.
KTVU insists that these names were actually confirmed by the NTSB. So who is at fault, remains to be seen.
You see stuff like this pop every now and again, with some interns in the back cracking wise on news reports, unbeknownst to the news anchors and reporters. But the fact that somebody either at KTVU or the NTSB decided to crack jokes about a plane crash that has ultimately killed three people, the fact that they made racist Asian jokes about the pilots names, and the fact that the reporters read the names on air without finding anything wrong is stunning.
