A day after being criticized for a lack of coverage into the Governor Andrew Cuomo ethics scandal, CNN has checked in with a report involving the administration lawyering up with a prominent white collar criminal defense lawyer.
Elkan Abramowitz told CNN that Cuomo’s office is trying “to make sure we are cooperating fully with US Attorney’s investigation.”
CNN notes that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for an investigation, with some suggesting Cuomo should resign. Adding to the fray is Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney (R) who believes Cuomo should resign “immediately.”
Some state lawmakers have called on Cuomo to resign over the new allegations. Republican Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney alleged the entire Moreland Commission was used as a stick to coerce lawmakers’ votes to line up with the governor’s’ agenda.
“He should resign immediately, his Modus Operandi has been to bully and intimidate his opponents and now it’s come to light that he’s been interfering with his own ethics commission. It’s a disgrace,” Tenney said.
Last week, the New York Times dropped the original bomb on the Cuomo administration, unearthing several sources who have corroborated stories that the Governor’s office interfered with the Moreland Commission from the onset. Top aides were even cited as demanding members of the ethics panel “pull back” subpoenas issued to groups close to the Governor.
Since then, Cuomo has allegedly coordinated his own defense of the scandal and could face witness tampering or obstruction of justice charges. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara sent Cuomo an ominous letter warning him against such criminal actions.
