President Trump on Wednesday signed a memorandum discharging the federal student loan debt of disabled veterans.
“Since our founding, the United States has been blessed with men and women willing to serve in defense of our Nation and our ideals,” an announcement from the White House reads.
It goes on to explain that those same men and women sometimes “make the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” while others endure physical and emotional scars preventing them from being able to work and pay off their student loans.
“My administration will take prompt action to ensure that all totally and permanently disabled veterans are able to obtain, with minimal burden, the Federal student loan debt discharges to which they are legally entitled,” Trump writes.
CNN reports that the executive action will make student loan cancellation “automatic” for disabled veterans.
“It is America who owes our heroes an extreme debt of gratitude,” Trump stated during an American Veterans conference in Louisville, Kentucky.
Veterans Support Trump
A recent Pew Research poll shows that veterans approve of the way the President is handling the military, along with other related issues such as withdrawing the United States from the Iran nuclear deal and sending troops to protect the southern border.
Trump, in announcing the student debt cancellation, also reminded the media of other positive moves he’s made for our veterans. Particularly, in regards to healthcare.
“After years of neglect, we’re fixing the heartbreaking failures from the last administration at the Department of Veterans Affairs,” he said. “America must never abandon their heroes at their hour of need.”
In January, Trump issued an executive order directing resources to help aid veterans returning to civilian life. The administration implemented breast cancer screening guidelines for female veterans. And the President has initiated critical reforms to the VA while enforcing strict accountability standards.
“Our veterans are a national treasure, and I thank them all for their service, sacrifice, and patriotism,” Trump declared in a previous Veterans Day speech.
How Democrats Treat Veterans Families
Compare and contrast this effort by President Trump to those of Democrats in the liberal cesspool of the Empire State.
Democrats in the New York State Assembly earlier this year voted to halt a bill that would have provided free college tuition for Gold Star families.
The move came just one week after the same lawmakers approved a state budget that included a ‘Dream Act’ including $27 million in financial aid to students brought into the country illegally as children.
It’s just another clear example that while the radical left is willing to sacrifice benefits for veterans for political purposes, while the President simply cares about doing the right thing for them.
