Trending: Biden Questions Nikki Haley’s ‘Brains,’ She Immediately Slaps Him Down

HASNIE: “Plenty of Dems want to legalize marijuana, but this is the first time we’ve heard a 2020 contender pledge to decriminalize every single drug out there. Listen to this.”

[Clip starts]

BUTTIGIEG: “Incarceration should not even be a response to drug possession.”

EDITOR: “Is that across the board? So if it’s meth or coke or ecstasy, any drugs, if it’s possession, incarceration isn’t — “

BUTTIGIEG: “That’s right.”

HASNIE: “Meth, coke, ecstasy, all of it. Mayor Pete releasing his bold drug plan this week, it also includes reducing sentences for other drug offenses and expunging past convictions. So how does it stack up against the other top Dems? Take a look. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, both want to legalize marijuana. Joe Biden and Amy Klobuchar want to decriminalize it but want to let the states decide whether to legalize it or not. None, though, have expanded their plans to include all drugs. This is definitely a way for Buttigieg to stand out and he needs that. A national NBC/Wall Street Journal poll has him in fourth place with just nine percentage points. He’s doing a whole lot better in Iowa with the quarter of Democrat caucus goers. Former federal prosecutor Francey Hakes weighing in earlier this morning on the plan. Watch this.”

HAKES: “I have seen the ravages of meth and cocaine that they leave on communities, the violence that rises when people become addicted to these substances and are desperate to get them no matter what it takes, the burglaries, the assaults, the murders. I don’t understand anyone who says that decriminalizing drugs is going to lead to some sort of decrease in crime. I feel like just the opposite is going to happen.”

HASNIE: “And guys, it’s just not clear yet if this particular headline is going to be good for him or not. I’m sure we’ll see soon.”

SHIMKUS: “There’s already reaction coming in. Radio host Tony Katz says Buttigieg’s plan doesn’t matter because President Trump is already blowing Democrats out of the water on criminal justice reform.”

[Clip starts]

KATZ: “Pete Buttigieg is a day late and a dollar short. Donald Trump is beating him to the punch on ideas and conversations of criminal reform. It’s an important subject, it’s a worthy subject, and we may decide as a society that certain things shouldn’t carry certain jail times. But when you tell people across the country hey, you’ve got meth, meh — that’s a real problem.”

REPORTER: “It has been one year since President Trump signed The First Step Act, that’s a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill aimed at refining sentencing laws and harsh penalties.”
