A Muslim immigrant declared that struggling to make ends meet under the Obama administration led her to vote for President-elect Donald Trump, according to a Washington Post op-ed.
Asra Q. Nomani, the co-founder of the Muslim Reform Movement and a self-professed liberal, rejected the notion that all Trump supporters are motivated by racism, sexism or bigotry.
Nomani explained that she voted for Trump because of concern over Islamic extremism and not being able to afford healthcare under Obamacare.
“But I am a single mother who can’t afford health insurance under Obamacare. The president’s mortgage-loan modification program, ‘HOPE NOW,’ didn’t help me. Tuesday, I drove into Virginia from my hometown of Morgantown, W.Va., where I see rural America and ordinary Americans, like me, still struggling to make ends meet, after eight years of the Obama administration,” Nomani wrote.
The Democratic Party’s tendency to refuse to use the term “radical Islamic terrorism” is also concerning, Nomani wrote.
“Finally, as a liberal Muslim who has experienced, first-hand, Islamic extremism in this world, I have been opposed to the decision by President Obama and the Democratic Party to tap dance around the “Islam” in Islamic State,” Nomani maintained.
Nomani said that while she rejects Trump’s locker room talk and building a wall between the United States, she doesn’t believe the “political hyperbole” that vilified Trump and his supporters.
“I have absolutely no fears about being a Muslim in a ‘Trump America.’ The checks and balances in America and our rich history of social justice and civil rights will never allow the fear-mongering that has been attached to candidate Trump’s rhetoric to come to fruition,” Nomani wrote.
A black writer also came out to support Trump and his policies. Before the election, Jay Stephens wrote an op-ed explaining that Trump “divisive rhetoric” was necessary for the black community. (RELATED: Black Writer: Trump’s Divisive ‘Policy Driven’ Rhetoric Is What Black People Need)
“African Americans must look beyond the absurdist racist caricature that has been painted for us of Trump and be prepared to talk honestly about how illegal immigration is one of the many forces hampering our success,” Stephens wrote.
