Montage: Chris Matthews Loses His Mind over Kennedy Retirement, Trump’s Replacement

“Because this is time for vengeance for what happened two years ago, and if they don’t reap the vengeance now with four and a half months to go before the election, they will not look strong to their base and I think they’ll be under attack and you will see more Joe Crowley’s go down.”

“And they have to get out there and fight on this one. And I’ll tell you, there are ways to do it. Susan Collins is no right winger or she wouldn’t be a senator from Maine. Murkowski is no right winger. There are people who can be drawn into the Democratic position in resisting this nomination early on and making clear to Mitch McConnell, ‘We’re not voting till the voters vote.’ I think that should be the song: ‘Don’t vote till the voters vote.’”

“And they want to foist a judge who is going to be the deciding judge in the Supreme Court for the next 30 or 40 years in the last weeks before an election which will decide who controls the United States’ Senate? That would be insane for the Democrats to allow that.”

“Win or lose, I don’t think you can have a vote on the Supreme Court with a 50-49 vote. It is an absurdity. It is one thing to get rid of the filibuster rule, but to allow it to be decided on a 50-49 margin, something that will effect this country for the next 30 years is a travesty.”

“All these decisions strike most people as partisan. They’re not even considered ideological, now coming against public service employee unions. By the way, the heart of the labor movement right now, if you look at who is really voting and paying dues, is public service people, teachers like that. The larger percentage of the labor movement, construction. They’re going to see this. I think everybody on the left and center left is going to say, ‘Yeah, the Supreme Court is partisan against us. This is the big one for us. We better stop this.’”

“I think it’s going to be almost like Spanish Civil War stuff. You watch the next few months. It will be interesting.”

“But if he picks a nominee like that, who is so adverse to the legacy of Anthony Kennedy, that’s the scare and that’s why the Democrats would be very wise not to let this get anywhere near a vote before November.”

“But if he gets replaced by a hardline social conservative, it is — the Democratic leadership will have hell to pay. They cannot let this happen. They have to play hardball. They’ve got to do exactly to the other side what Mitch McConnell did to them, play hardball and win. They must prevent the Republican-controlled Senate to pick another justice on this hard-right court.”

“They are playing all of these games. ‘It’s 60 votes, now it’s 50. By the way, we are not going to have a vote on it.’ Here they come in and they say, ‘Let’s do it nice now, let’s make sure we have a vote even though we only have 50 votes to their 49. Let’s make good order here.’ It’s not going to happen. If Schumer goes along with that, the whole gang of them are gone. Look at what happened to Joe Crowley yesterday. He’s gone. The left of the Democratic Party, the Progressive base of the party, minorities, young people, millennials, it’s also Hispanics, Latinos, African-Americans, they are tired of losing. They are tired of losing.”

“It’s not about fired up. I’m telling you that the party is going to be fired up about this if Schumer doesn’t stop this. They will find a way to do it. There are ways to slow down votes, there are ways to prevent a modest majority of 50 to 49 from getting its way. They will find that way or they will fail. And if they fail, they will lose their leadership.”

“By the way, to answer another question, I don’t think Susan Collins is going to vote for somebody to the right of Anthony Kennedy. I’m not sure Murkowski will. I think you’ll find some others out there.”

“Good evening, I’m Chris Matthews. In Washington there are times to fight and this is one of them. If the Democrats in the U.S. Senate allow President Trump to pack the Supreme Court with a 5-4 majority for the next 30 years, it’s not something that Progressive Democratic voter will soon forget.”
