A state senator from California and pro-gun control Democrat, Leland Yee, was sentenced to five years in prison for crimes which included conspiring to commit wire fraud and – get this – gun trafficking.

Yee had been charged as part of a major crime ring which saw numerous arrests for a criminal conspiracy to illegally transport firearms in exchange for campaign donations.

Former California State Senator Leland Yee was sentenced to five years in prison by a federal district judge on Tuesday for his role in a complex case of political corruption. He was also fined $20,000.

The 67-year-old pleaded guilty last July to racketeering charges in connection with two criminal enterprises related to soliciting bribes and smuggling guns. Lee also admitted to receiving more than $40,000 in bribes for political favors. Specifically, he promised an undercover FBI agent quid pro quo favors in return for campaign contributions.

Prior to his arrest, Yee was known in his career as a crusader for gun-control. Here is a statement that had been issued on his Senate web site, in which he bragged about one of his gun hating honors:

For his commitment to ending gun violence, Assembly Speaker pro Tem Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/Daly City) has been named to the Gun Violence Prevention Honor Roll by the Brady Campaign. The Brady Campaign will honor Yee and other state legislators from throughout the country who earned an A+ for working against gun violence at a reception during the National Conference of State Legislators in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday, August 16, 2006.

Yee also tried to ban the sale of violent video games to children. He can be seen here at a press conference denouncing games such as Grand Theft Auto, where he can now presumably star as one of the games main characters.
