A new survey from Pew Research Center finds that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s supporters, and in particular white Clinton supporters, are much less respectful of GOP nominee Donald Trump’s supporters than Trump supporters are of them.
According to Pew, 58 percent of Clinton supporters say they have a “hard time” respecting Trump supporters, while 40 percent say they have no trouble doing so. For Trump supporters, the numbers are nearly reversed: 40 percent said they struggled to respect Clinton backers, while 56 percent had no trouble.
But Clinton’s supporters were not uniformly dismissive towards Trump voters. Clinton’s white supporters are extremely hostile towards Trump backers, while minorities are much more accepting.
Notably, despite Trump’s tough talk on immigration, Hispanic voters are the most accepting, with 45 percent saying they struggle to respect Trump voters while 53 percent have no trouble. Blacks, meanwhile, are evenly split, with 48 percent struggling to respect Trump fans and 50 percent having no trouble.
Among whites, though, a whopping 64 percent had a hard time respecting Trump voters, while just 34 percent did not.
There were other points of significant division between Clinton and Trump supporters. For instance, youthful Trump supporters were the most tolerant of Clinton backers, with just 29 percent having a hard time respecting them. On the other hand, Clinton’s youngest supporters were the most intolerant of Trump support. Among Trump supporters, education levels made no difference, while among Clinton backers, college graduates were far less respectful.
