CNN Seriously Asks If Marco Rubio’s Sip of Water Could End His Career

We’ve all seen the media obsession with Marco Rubio’s State of the Union rebuttal, in which content and message was reduced to the background and the fact that the man became thirsty mid-speech was the main highlight.  In case you missed it, this is what the media has been covering for the last few days…

Via Reuters:

Across the Web, from to The New Yorker, and on every cable news channel, the Florida senator’s sip from a small bottle of water as he delivered the official Republican response to U.S. President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday was the moment of the evening.

In politics, timing can be everything and Rubio experienced a dry mouth at probably the worst time imaginable, speaking to a live TV camera before an audience of millions.

So when the rising political star abruptly stopped in mid-speech to reach for a small Poland Spring bottle of water out of view and took a sip from it, the awkward incident took on a life of its own.

Not only was the media response to Rubio’s sip of water absurd because of the amount of time spent on it, but because of the over-dramatization of the impact.  The Reuters example above calls it an “awkward moment” coming at “the worst time imaginable”.

Dramatic much?

Not to be outdone however, CNN has actually and seriously, asked if Rubio’s sip of water could end his career.

Screen grab via Power Line:

Matt Hadro of NewsBusters explains that the graphic actually accompanied a segment by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

On Wednesday’s The Situation Room, host Wolf Blitzer absurdly wondered if Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) pausing his State of the Union response for a drink of water would “break” his career.  The CNN chyron flashed “Career-ender?”

“So can a drink of water make or break a political career?” Blitzer asked. “A U.S. Senator, possible presidential candidate. We’re going to find out, whether he likes it or not.”

Here’s the video…

In the history of politics…

Has ever paused in the middle of a speech…

For a sip of water…

This just demonstrates that CNN and Wolf Blitzer are no longer viable sources of breaking news, but have been reduced to tabloid Republican bashing at the bottom of the barrel.

Enjoy the descent into obscurity old media.
