The author of a new book claims two former cabinet members were willing to go along with invoking the 25th Amendment to have President Trump removed from office.
The book, titled ‘Deep State: Trump, the FBI, and the Rule of Law,’ written by James B. Stewart, alleges that former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein believed he would get support for his plan to remove the President.
Rosenstein sought to entrap Trump by secretly recording his conversations, or invoke the 25th Amendment, a constitutional provision allowing for the removal of the President should he be deemed medically, or as resistance members are hoping, mentally unfit.
Stewart writes that both former chief of staff John Kelly and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions said they might back the tactic.
“[Rosenstein] … denied saying that he wanted to invoke the 25th Amendment,” Stewart said in an interview on MSNBC. “But there are also witnesses to that conversation, and he even named two cabinet-level people who were going to support that — namely John Kelly, the chief of staff, and [Jeff] Sessions, the attorney general.”
Rosenstein, according to Stewart, also brought up the prospect of wearing a wire to take down the President.
“I never get searched, no one ever searches me,” he reportedly said. “I could record the President.”
The concept of wearing a wire or invoking the 25th Amendment at one point to remove Trump from office was also admitted to by former top lawyer for the FBI, James Baker.
“There are these — some number of conversations with the Deputy Attorney General about what to do next, what needs to be done,” Baker testified. “My recollection is numerous topics were discussed, and these [25th Amendment/wire] were among them.”
Baker added then, that at least two cabinet members in the Trump administration were reportedly open to the notion.
“The 25th Amendment conversation, my understanding was that there was a conversation in which it was said, I believe by [Rosenstein], that there were – that there were two members of the cabinet who were willing to go down this road already,” he said.

Stewart reports that any assurances from cabinet members may not have been genuine. But Rosenstein sure believed they were.
“Mr. Rosenstein told Mr. McCabe during a May 16, 2017, meeting that Attorney General Jeff Sessions and John F. Kelly, the homeland security secretary, would most likely support such a move,” a New York Times article reads.
John Solomon of ‘The Hill‘ previously reported that these options amounted to “a real plan being discussed” and something that “was no laughing matter for the FBI.”
Rosenstein in September denied reports that he had seriously sought the help of Sessions and Kelly to make an argument that the President was unfit saying, “Based on my personal dealings with the president, there is no basis to invoke the 25th Amendment.”
