Prime Example of Why Arming and Training Teachers Is A Smart Idea

Militants raided a university in Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least 22 people when they launched an attack timed to coincide with a ceremony at the school to help ensure maximum carnage.

A previous attack in 2014 by the same group at a school in the city of Peshawar, resulted in the deaths of roughly 150 students.

After that terrorist attack, officials decided to arm teachers and give them weapons training, something liberals have fought tooth and nail against here in the United States.

That decision to arm teachers in Pakistan may have saved lives, and one man – Chemistry teacher Syed Hussain – is being hailed as a hero for helping save lives during the recent attack.

Via the Washington Post:

After terrorists killed about 150 people at a school in northwestern Pakistan 13 months ago, officials started arming teachers and gave them weapons training.

Like the debate over guns in schools in the United States and elsewhere, the move was controversial and divided parents and academic officials. But a Pakistani teacher armed with a pistol is being credited with saving lives during a terrorist attack Wednesday at Bacha Khan University in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

According to Agence France-Presse, Syed Hamid Husain, an assistant chemistry professor, pulled out his pistol and began firing at two of the attackers as they neared a classroom. But the 27-year-old teacher was outgunned by the militants, who were armed with assault rifles. After a gun battle, Husain was killed, students said.

Still, students at the college in Charsadda, about 30 miles from Peshawar, say Husain is hero. By pulling out his weapon, they told reporters, their teacher gave them time to escape.

A comment posted to the Post article reads, “The real heroes of this article are the teacher and student who held off the attackers … allowing students to escape.”

Students said Husain battled the terrorists for about 15 minutes giving them time to flee. Officials also noted that armed security guards on the campus “had been instrumental in averting a far deadlier tragedy.”

It’s a far cry from the gun free zones seen at most schools in America, where students are viewed as sitting ducks by mass murderers.

The good guy with a gun might not have completely stopped the attack from a team of multiple, well-trained gunmen in yesterday’s terrorist attack, but it sure helped save lives and lowered the casualty rate from 150 at a previous attack, to 22.

Imagine if all of the teachers at the school were armed.
