A few years ago, as the iPhone and Android market wars were beginning to heat up, Steve Jobs took a jab at the Google marketplace, asserting the moral high road when it came to porn availability.

In response to an e-mail Jobs wrote, “… we do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone.  Folks who want porn can buy and [sic] Android phone.”

Jobs may have simply been taking a cheap shot at the competition while propping up his own iTunes product.  The Google Play Store after all, prohibits pornography.

Or does it?

We are about to demonstrate that the Google Play Store does indeed offer some pornography that can be accessed with a minimal amount of web savvy, and a monetary source that requires no proof of age.

In short, foreign porn can be accessed in the Google Play Store using an e-mail account that anyone can create using fabricated information, and a Visa gift card which can be used by persons of any age.

Observe…

When accessing the Google Play homepage, you’ll be hit with some family-friendly suggestions, such as Pixar Classics, or the Disney collection:

Searching the database through a category called “World Cinema” brings you to numerous foreign titles.  Number 15 on the best seller list is a Czech film called 4Some.

The cover of the film immediately indicates the content, featuring two couples showering together.

The IMDB movie site lists 4Some under their adult category, with an X-rating.  IMDB also turns this product up when certain keywords and terms are searched, such as “female frontal nudity” and “male frontal nudity”.

One comment associated with the film seems to be aghast that porn is being offered in the Google Play Store.  Sarah Rodriguez writes, “Wow, they’re allowed to sell porn on here?”  That was three months ago:

In order to proceed with purchasing the foreign porn flick, a gmail account is needed:

In order to conduct our experiment, we created a dummy e-mail account under the name “Benjamin Franklin”, using his birthday, but 1906 as the year.

Once signed in, the user is prompted for format options:

Next step – credit card information:

Here, we used a Visa pre-paid gift card purchased at the local convenience store:

After accepting the gift card, a sub-total is presented:

After pressing “Buy”, voila!  Your foreign, x-rated, full frontal nudity porn is ready for viewing:

To summarize, we were able to purchase a porn film in the Google Play store relatively easily, using a dummy e-mail account under the name Benjamin Franklin, using Franklin’s birthday in the year 1906, and with an anonymous gift card that in no way verified who we were, or how old we might be.

If this can be done here, an even mildly tech-savvy 12-year-old could easily make the same purchase.

Look around the Google Play Store, there are other titles with questionable material.  Another we were able to locate with relative ease was called The Taste of Money, which had a rating of 18.

Has Steve Job’s prediction come to light?  It certainly appears that porn can be purchased on the Android market.  Worse, it can easily be done by minors.
