While Hillary Clinton was busy “making history” last night and sending smarmy Instagram messages, Donald Trump got busy after his own clean sweep of the day’s primaries to reach out to a specific group of disenchanted voters. These were not Republicans weary of eight years of Barack Obama and/or sellouts in their own party.

These were Bernie Sanders supporters, who are virtually leaderless now that their white-haired lord and master has been officially eliminated from the nomination race.

Here was Trump’s message (video follows):

To all of those Bernie Sanders voters who have been left out in the cold by a rigged system of superdelegates, we welcome you with open arms. And by the way, the terrible trade deals that Bernie was so vehemently against — and he’s right on that — will be taken care of far better than anyone ever thought possible, and that’s what I do.

To those who voted for someone else – in either party – I will work hard to earn your support, and I will work very hard to earn that support.

I understand the responsibility of carrying the mantle, and I will never, ever let you down. I will make you proud of our party and our movement.

The reference to “terrible trade deals” was a reference to 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which Hillary Clinton has at various times supported. It was revealed in this space yesterday that the administration would block release of correspondence on that subject between then-Secretary of State Clinton and the U.S. Trade Representative until the 31st of November.

In general Trump leads Clinton on the subject of trade and other top-ranking economic issues, according to a recent Gallup poll.
