How charming of Charlie Rangel to accuse Tea Partiers of racism by referring to them using racial slurs.
Via Talking Points Memo:
In an interview with the Daily Beast published Friday, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) suggested Tea Partiers are the “same group” who fought for segregation during the Civil Rights movement.
“It is the same group we faced in the South with those white crackers and the dogs and the police. They didn’t care about how they looked,” Rangel said.
Because of this, Rangel said the Tea Party could be defeated using the same tactics employed against Jim Crow.
“It was just fierce indifference to human life that caused America to say enough is enough. ‘I don’t want to see it and I am not a part of it.’ What the hell! If you have to bomb little kids and send dogs out against human beings, give me a break,” said Rangel.
Referring to conservatives as “white crackers” aside, these comments show that Rangel, while clearly a good race-baiter, isn’t exactly an accomplished historian. The party of segregation, the party of Jim Crow, has always been the Democrat party. Rangel’s Democrat party.
Here’s a little reminder courtesy of Human Events and Jesse Jackson Jr. of all people:
… Congressman Jessie Jackson Jr. (D.-Ill.) explained in an interview with Fox News contributor Angela McGlowan in her book Bamboozled:
“There is no doubt that the Democratic Party is the party of the Confederacy, historically, that the Democratic Party’s flag is the Confederate flag. It was our party’s flag. That Jefferson Davis was a Democrat, that Stonewall Jackson strongly identified with the Democratic Party, that secessionists in the South saw themselves as Democrats and were Democrats. That so much of the Democratic Party’s history, since it is our nation’s oldest political party, has its roots in slavery.”
How did the same Jim Crow Democrats who fought tooth-and-nail with segregationists to keep blacks on a virtual plantation become the party that now wins 95% of the black vote? Republicans passed Civil Rights laws, Democrats wrote revisionist history.
Also, when the FDR White House passed a federal anti-lynching bill in the ’30s, it was the entrenched Democrat senators in the south who “filibustered it to death.”
But hey, Rangel never lets facts get in the way of an opportunity to slur members of the Tea Party.
