A new poll from the Pew Research Center indicates that 60% of people that identify as ‘solid liberals’ do not describe themselves as proud to be American.
Via the Washington Post:
Michelle Obama took some heat in 2008 for saying that, “for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country…”
As it turns out, that sentiment isn’t all that unusual on the far left of American politics. According to a new Pew Research Center study, only 40 percent of consistently liberal Americans say they often feel proud to be Americans.
The other 60 percent say that doesn’t describe them.
As the Pew chart shows, that 40% mark is the lowest for any group identified in the report by a full 11%. The next lowest group to say they often feel proud to be American, is a group labeled ‘Hard-Pressed Skeptics.’ Even then, a majority of these skeptics are still proud to be American, at 51%.
The leading groups identifying as proud to be American were ‘business conservatives’ at 81%, and ‘steadfast conservatives’ at 72%.
The report also indicates that liberals are equally as disdainful of the concepts of ‘honor and duty.’
Feelings of pride in being American – and a belief that honor and duty are core values – are much more widespread among the two conservative groups than the other typology groups.
Overall, 81% of Business Conservatives and 72% of Steadfast Conservatives say the phrase “often feel proud to be American” describes them well. These are by far the highest percentages across typology groups. Smaller majorities of the Faith and Family Left (59%), Next Generation Left (56%) and Young Outsiders (56%) say they often feel a sense of pride in being American.
However, Hard-Pressed Skeptics are divided – about as many say they often feel pride in being American (51%) as do not (49%). And just 40% of Solid Liberals say they often feel pride in being American; 60% say that characterization does not fit them well.
In addition to high levels of patriotism, the groups on the right also are most likely to say they have a sense of honor and duty. About seven-in-ten Business Conservatives (70%) and Steadfast Conservatives (68%) say the phrase “honor and duty are my core values” fits them. Far fewer in the other typology groups, including just 40% of Solid Liberals, say this description applies well to them.
In addition, 16% of solid liberals believe there are other countries that are better than America. Only 11% rank the U.S. as the top country in the world.
