Democrats in New York are pushing for – and openly hoping for – a chance to grant citizen and voting rights to illegal immigrants, making the Empire State a sanctuary state.
A bill titled the New York Is Home Act, discussed here at the Mental Recession back in June, has received little attention from the media because it seems so far-fetched. In fact, we personally had a reporter from ABC News respond to an e-mail asking if illegals were being given a path to citizen and voting rights through the municipal ID program, scoffing at the suggestion.
Admittedly, even during our report we also scoffed at the idea, saying the New York Is Home Act has “no chance of passing.”
Unfortunately, that may not be true after all. And the New York Post has caught on:
Illegal aliens in New York could score billions in Medicaid and college tuition money — along with driver’s licenses, voting rights and even the ability to run for office — if Democrats win control of the state Senate in November, The Post has learned.
A little-known bill, dubbed “New York is Home,” would offer the most sweeping amnesty available anywhere in the country to nearly 3 million noncitizens living in the Empire State.
It would bar police from releasing any information about them to the feds, unless it involves a criminal warrant unrelated to their immigration status.
Under the proposed legislation, undocumented immigrants could also apply for professional licenses and serve on juries.
The plan hinges on Democrats — who now control both the governorship and the state Assembly — wresting control of the Senate from Republicans, who oppose immigration amnesty.
The Post report mentions that illegal immigrants would be granted voting rights in state and local elections, and that the first step towards making this a reality was the municipal ID program which Mayor Bill de Blasio recently signed into law.
The report also cites Democrats such as State Senator Gustavo Rivera, the bill’s sponsor, along with Democratic Brooklyn Assemblyman Karim Camara, cheering a Democrat majority in the Senate as the best possible path for granting amnesty to nearly 3 million illegal immigrants in the state.
Republican officials meanwhile, were none-to-thrilled with the idea of bypassing federal immigration laws to make New York a sanctuary state, saying it would open a door to further abuse and fraud. Not to mention concerns of terrorism at our borders, of which ISIS has reportedly been trying to exploit.
Governor Cuomo seems to agree with granting perks that should be reserved for legal residents to illegals as well, announcing a last-ditch effort to drum up support from liberal extremists – his newly found desire to provide them with college tuition.
