President Donald Trump’s hard line against immigration has helped reignite a decade-old effort to let undocumented immigrants in New York get drivers licenses.

Amid chants of “Si Se Puede” or “Yes One Can,” members of several groups including Make the Road NY and the NY Immigration Coalition hailed Queens Democratic Assemblyman Francisco Moya on Tuesday for his introduction of a bill that would allow immigrants — legal or not — to get licenses.

Noting that 12 others states already have similar programs, supporters including New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer and David Kallick, a researcher with the labor-backed Fiscal Policy Institute, pointed to the practical benefits of licensing undocumented immigrants.
