TRUMP: “Using horrible, horrible chemical weapons, which they agreed not to use under the Obama Administration but they violated it. What I did, should have been done by the Obama Administration a long time before I did it.”

[clip ends]

SCOTT: “He’s not the only one who thinks so. President Trump blasting his predecessors inaction in Syria saying President Obama left the world less safe.”

HEGSETH: “Among those who agree, several former Obama Administration officials and one of those officials joining us now, his name is berry Pavel and he was on President Trump’s Security Council staff and now the senior vice president at the atlantic council. Thank you very much for joining thus morning. Where do you believe president Obama went wrong?”

PAVEL: “Well, I think the main issue and let me just be clear, I was a career civil servant so I worked for Democratic administrations and Republican administrations. I think they looked at it at humanitarian crisis only from the very beginning it was a national security crisis and look what it’s done in the succeeding five years, disintegrating Europe with the massive flow of refugees incubating extremism that’s really reaching out to every region of the globe creating instability in the immediate region. A number of issues on U.S. National security not just saving civilians. Sometimes the world doesn’t cooperate with our narrative and so I think that was his natural inclination but I think it caused a lot of damage not just in Syria but other allies, Europe and Asia after that started questioning, does the U.S. have the will, we know they have the capability, does the U.S. have the will to back up alliances with us.”

HEGSETH: “You said if we had the capabilities but not the will under the Obama Administration, do you believe President Trump and his team have that will and are using it correctly?”

PAVEL: “I think they have the will, I think the strikes in Syria were the beginning of a down payment of restoring the alliance network which is global asset but I think we will have to see what else — what other situations we will have to demonstrate the result and the commitment that’s required if we are going to protect our particular national interest.”

SCOTT: “You agree with president Trump that it became less safe during Obama Administration?”

PAVEL: “I think it’s less safe. Unfortunately there’s a pattern to that and it’s because they didn’t think the U.S. was going to do anything.”

HEGSETH: “If the U.S. Isn’t there it can lead to vacuums that are quite dangerous. Barry Pavel, thank you very much.”

PAVEL: “My pleasure.”
