A couple of months ago, reports surfaced that Donald Trump was being wooed by New York Republicans to challenge Andrew Cuomo for governor of the state. Now, the Donald has made a rock-hard confirmation … He’s thinking about it.
Via the Daily Mail:
Donald Trump, the billionaire real estate mogul and sometimes aspiring presidential candidate, has now set his sights on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s seat.
The 67-year-old reality TV star and tireless self-promoter said this week that he is toying with the idea of challenging the Democratic incumbent, whom he described as vulnerable due to the state’s high taxes and tight gun-control laws.
Trump has met with Republican leaders and has pledged to spend tens of millions of dollars on a potential campaign, though those are the same kind of motions he’s made once before for governor and several times for president over the years without ever actually jumping in.
For now, he is in no hurry to make up his mind.
‘I’ve got time,’ he told The Associated Press in an interview this week. ‘I believe — and many people believe — I’m the only Republican who can win. I think I would win easily.’
While Trump would provide Republicans with name recognition in a candidate that they wouldn’t otherwise have, he would also further damage any brand-building for other candidates if he were to use a candidacy to simply further his own publicity, only to then drop out as he is known to do.
Other potential candidates such as Rob Astorino would have difficulty getting their message out if the media were solely obsessed with Trump’s antics.
