Apparently, this is a real campaign ad.  The Erie County Democratic Committee found the single most important issue of the 2014 race for Governor in New York.  It’s not corruption in which Cuomo officials themselves are being investigated.  It’s not out of control taxation and the worst business climate in the nation.

No, the Democrats went after Cuomo’s Republican opponent Rob Astorino for being … a Miami Dolphin’s fan.

Here is a transcript…

Narrator:  This weekend, when the Miami Dolphins come to town, we’ll all be rooting for our Buffalo Bills.  Well, everyone that is except for Rob Astorino.  You see Astorino is a Miami Dolphion’s fan.  Governor Cuomo stood with us.  He’s delivered for Buffalo and all of western New York. So this November when Rob Astorino comes asking for your vote, let’s remember who was on our team.

No, we’re serious.  That was the actual content of the commercial.

Here is the actual ad from Cuomo’s cronies:

Via LoHud:

Officially, the ad was financed by the Erie County Democratic Committee, according to the mandatory disclosure included in the spot. But it bears similarities to advertisements run by the Cuomo-controlled state Democratic Committee—including the same narrator as several ads attacking Astorino.

It makes no arguments about Astorino’s record or policies—only mentioning his football team of choice.

“He has been a Dolphins fan since he was 5 years old—Griese and Shula were his heroes as a boy,” Astorino spokeswoman Jessica Proud said in a statement. “We have the highest taxes in the country, the worst economic outlook, the Governor is under criminal investigation and this is what they’re choosing to talk about? It says it all.”

That wasn’t even the dumbest part of this brain-shrinking ad.  The Democrats actually photo-shopped Astorino’s son out of the image used in the spot.

Via the Times Union:

The Astorino campaign isn’t exactly accusing the Cuomo campaign folks of Stalinist tactics. But erasing photos of disgraced or disappeared apparatchiks in various Soviet publications was a favorite propaganda tactic of the late dictator.

In this case, the Astorino campaign notes that a Cuomo TV ad running in western New York, which blasts the GOP challenger for being a Miami Dolphins fan, features a photo of Astorino in Miami’s Sun Life stadium with his young son Sean. But the photo that appears in the Cuomo ad is withoutSean, who was apparently Photoshopped into oblivion.

Because the last thing the Democrats want to do is make you believe Astorino was spending quality time with his son at a Dolphin’s game.

If we’re splitting hairs here, Governor Cuomo actually is a big supporter of the New York Giants, a team that plays its home games in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
