At a recent breakfast in Harlem, Governor Andrew Cuomo continued to call for federal gun control, saying his SAFE Act wasn’t able to prevent the shooting death of a former aide because anybody “from some state down south” can bring an illegal firearm into New York.
The aide, Carey Gabay, dies at the hands of a gunshot wound he suffered nine days earlier during a stray shooting from gang members.
According to the New York Daily News, Cuomo told Harlem breakfast attendees, “The cruel irony here is that we passed the toughest gun control law in the country here in New York.” He was talking about the SAFE Act, which requires firearm registration, bans “assault rifles,” bans “high capacity” ammunition magazines, and expands background checks, all with the promise of reducing gun violence.
But it has not worked. In fact, gun violence in New York City is surging this year.
So Cuomo is blaming the South. “As long as you can get a gun from some state down south, put it in a trunk and drive it up, it’s gonna get into this state, and that’s what’s happening.”
The gunman, however, has not been apprehended nor the source of his gun ascertained. But this did not stop Cuomo from pushing more gun control, saying, “It comes back to the craziness of the gun violence that we allow to occur. I am a gun owner. I’m not anti-gun. I’m anti-gun for mentally ill people and criminals.”
Cuomo of course, struggled mightily in his re-election bid this past campaign season, due in part to upstate opposition to his gun control efforts.
The Daily News even noted the tragic irony in that Gabay helped craft the SAFE Act legislation, and was killed most likely by a gang member wielding an already illegal gun.
Cuomo’s answer? More gun control, naturally.
The definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. How many times will it take before gun-grabbing liberals get it through their head that people are shot and killed by criminals who will obtain the weapons in any manner possible?
In a recent interview, a CNN reporter pointed out to Cuomo that the person who shot his aide had reportedly obtained the gun in spite of New York’s strict gun laws.
Naturally Cuomo responded that the only way to have stopped the shootings is to implement his vision for gun control nationwide.
Cuomo said anyone opposed to such measures is “delusional.”
